Read if you like: anything by Mindy Kaling or Amy Schumer
I am a huge fan of essay collections - especially ones written by funny women who aren’t afraid to poke fun at themselves. Jessi Klein writes for one of my favorite sketch comedy shows Inside Amy Schumer so I was pretty confident I’d dig her stories. I found myself laughing out loud multiple times during this one (which was interesting because I read it mostly on an airplane and everyone else was weirdly silent. The guys next to me was not pleased.) and also said “YESSSS” more times than I can count.
I loved the majority of the essays, but I think the one that I enjoyed the most was entitled Types and it was all about the types of guys Jessi liked to date. She has a whole paragraph about how she is perplexed at the amount of women who share her penchant for mediocre looking guys…which is something I always think about. SURELY NO OTHER GIRL IS DIGGING YOUR “I LIVE WITH MY PARENTS, DON’T HAVE A JOB, AND HAVE VERY QUESTIONABLE TASTE IN FASHION AND OTHER LIFE CHOICES” is a thought I often have…and then I lower my standards and settle accordingly and then they still have a plethora of options to choose from and it baffles me. But I’m not bitter.
Here’s my favorite quote from this essay:
“It Is one of the harshest realities of dating in New York that you can spy a man at a party who looks like a poor man’s Woody Allen, start heading over to say hello, and then be cockblocked by his girlfriend, a women who resembles but more likely simply just is Scarlett Johansson.”
I laughed so hard at this and have talked about it to every person I know. Anyway, there is lots of other great stuff in this book…you know me I just hoot and holler at all the observation about dating and men and such. If you like a good essay pick this one up. Ira Glass says “Jessi Klein is truly really funny.”
